The Green Zone, Iraq

We Recommend: The world’s ultimate gated community - the Green Zone

The Green Zone - it’s so intense - everyone, I mean everyone has a pistol on their hip. Civilians, Diplomats, aid workers, it’s so very odd to see such people going about their day-to-day life in such an environment.

The local Iraqis that work for and with us, IE engineers, architects, professionals, etc are really great people. They risk their lives everyday by coming into the Green Zone to work. It’s really amazing. They have to change their clothing, form of transportation, route of approach, entry points, they don’t even tell their families who/where they are working. Also, they do not like coming into the Green Zone as they consider this place one of the most dangerous locations in IRAQ.

Green Zone, where the campaign was held, houses the offices of the interim Iraqi government as well as the U.S. and British embassies. The Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq also is based inside the compound.

We did go to the Green Zone in Baghdad for two days. We stayed at the Pool Side Suites. It was Saddam's pool but not any more. It's now used by our embassy and the military brass. It has the look and feel of a country club pool back home. Hot, lazy days with picnic lunches and real beer available to non-military personnel - that's us - with a sign stating "Drinking is not allowed when armed." good advice anywhere. Watching girls in bikinis frolic in the pool while medivac helicopters stream by overhead reminded me of the insanity of Vietnam.
